THUNDER BAY, ON, MAY 11, 2016 – The Staal Foundation Open presented by Tbaytel Monday Qualifier will be held at Fort William Country Club on July 11th, 2016. This announced today, as Staal Foundation Open representatives highlighted details in regards to the qualification process for the 2016 tournament. “Fort William Country Club is honoured to be selected to host this year’s Staal Foundation Open Monday Qualifier. The course is in great condition and members are excited to have players at this level competing on their home course;” says Craig Morton Director of Golf. “Having a Mackenzie Tour - PGA TOUR Canada event in our community assists in growing the game at Fort William Country Club and all of the golf courses throughout the region.”
In addition to the Monday Qualifier details, the Staal Foundation Open presented by Tbaytel announced a number of exemptions into the tournament field. The Thunder Bay District Golf Association was awarded two exemptions for local and regional golfers. The first exemption will be awarded at the regional qualifier on June 11th, at Whitewater Golf Course, while the second will be announced following the District Open, which will be a two-day event on July 2nd at Whitewater Golf Course and July 3rd at Fort William Country Club. President of the Thunder Bay District Golf Association, Hank Wilke, says; “The Thunder Bay District Golf Association is thrilled to receive two exemptions for the Staal Foundation Open to be used for local and regional players. The exemptions create hype and interest amongst local golfers, especially the juniors. This is a once in a lifetime opportunity for local golfers to compete against some of the best up and comers in the world on their path to the PGA TOUR.”
Thunder Bay golfer Evan DeGrazia has had the opportunity to play in the Staal Foundation Open for the last two years. He explains how his experience has really helped excel his career. “Golf is a passion of mine and so receiving an exemption to play in last year’s Staal Foundation Open was an incredible experience. Having the opportunity to represent Thunder Bay and play against some of the best was a highlight of my golf career. The Staal Foundation Open definitely motivates young people to get involved in the game and gives those that are already invested a chance to take it to the next level.” DeGrazia adds that he has been working hard on his game and that he will definitely try to qualify for this year’s event.
Staal Foundation Open Executive Director Scott Smith, also announced some celebrities that will be in attendance. Returning for his second round and given the first sponsorship exemption, hockey hall-of-famer Grant Fuhr will tee up with the tournament and play in the Porter Celebrity Pro-Am.
“I’m so excited to be coming back to Thunder Bay. Last year’s event was so well organized and the people and the hospitality in Thunder Bay were second to none. To be given another opportunity to compete against some of the best up and coming players in the world is such an honor. I have a great deal of respect for these players as the Mackenzie Tour – PGA TOUR Canada is incredibly strong. I look forward to the competition this summer. I’m also thrilled about a little old fashion road hockey game. Thunder Bay is a big Hockey Town;” said Fuhr, who will also play in the Celebrity Pro-Am on the Monday of the weeklong event.
Among some of the new attendees at this years event will be Thunder Bay’s very own Northern Ontario skip Krista McCarville, former NHLer Dave Poulin and former NHL goalie Trevor Kidd. These three celebrity guests will also be attending the Porter Celebrity Pro-Am.
The 2016 Staal Foundation Open presented by Tbaytel is being hosted at Whitewater Golf Course from July 11th to July 17th. Opening round of this year’s official tournament play begins on Thursday July 14th. Opening ceremonies are scheduled for Monday, followed by the Pandora Intercity Summer Classic and the Porter Celebrity Pro-Am. A full schedule of activities is available online at: staalopen.ca.
